I started my blog way back in 2010 when I moved to London to study. Back then my blog had a different name and was my personal creative outlet, nothing more than a hobby I loved while studying. Fast forward almost 10 years later (in February) it’s my full-time job and I am able to make money doing what I love most.
If you ended up here, it means that you want to know how to make money blogging, right? I’m very pleased you’re here! In this article, I will tell you exactly how you can start a blog that makes money. By following these simple steps, you will be able to start a blog in a short time (it’s not that complicated really 🙂 ) and set it up the right way to start earning money.
The very FIRST things you need to know to create a successful money-making blog:
JUST START! Stop waiting, procrastinating and dreaming of what could be. If you do have the passion and really want to make a living blogging, the most important thing is to just start. Right now! Things don’t have to be perfect before you start. When I think back at how my content looked like in 2010 I can’t help but laugh and feel slightly embarrassed. But hey, that’s simply how it was back then and everyone starts from somewhere. If I hadn’t just started, I wouldn’t be able to work my dream job from the comfort of my home office today.
ALSO, you do not have to quit your job asap, nor take any unnecessary life-changing risk! You just need your vision, a working laptop, and the courage to just start right now!
I have been making a living from my blog for a number of years now. So how did I do it? Did it happen by coincidence? No! It was hard work, took a lot of time and commitment – but in the end it was all worth it. So if you are thinking you can’t do it, you are wrong! Just remember: blogging is not a get rich “the quick and easy way” thing. However you can 100% start a blog that makes money if you follow the right steps.
But keep in mind that you will encounter moments in which you are alone and no one is reading your blog (my first years of blogging back in 2010). In order to succeed you will have to keep pushing. Always keep your goal in mind so that you stay motivated no matter how many (or few) readers you might have month after month.
Writing an article which will spike interest will not always come easy. You will have to keep working at it. Imporoving your writing skills, which will at times also mean re-writing your content. Improving your photography skills will be a must, you will need to find out what works and what doesn’t work. Simply put, you will have to change things now and then. But most imporatntly:
YOU WILL HAVE TO PUT IN A LOT OF WORK.
No one is going to do the work for you.
It might take less than an hour to start your blog today, but building a successful blog that will actually earn you money will definitely take more time. But if you’re still up for one of the greatest profession out there, keep on reading!
Step 1 – Find A Niche/Blog Topic
The very first thing you will want to do is to find a niche, meaning deciding what your target audience should be. Who do you want to cater to? What kind of people do you want to read your blog and learn something? These are some of the more known possible niches to choose from:
But how do you find YOUR niche? Find out what you’re interested in, passionate about or good at and make sure you really like writing about it. Otherwise, you might end up quitting blogging due to lack of enjoyment. Finding your niche might take some time so don’t stress about it too much. You can start broader (i.e with a lifestyle blog) and then narrow your main topic down in time. But always remember, you’re writing for your audience, not yourself! You need to write about what your audience wants to read.
You need to help people to SOLVE THEIR PROBLEMS.
Personal life stories will most likely not get read much unless they are of some sort of helpful topic and it will make building an audience and monetizing your blog a lot harder (it will take much more time). So focus on your ideal readers and how you can create content that will be beneficial ( solve a problem) for them! This way you will be able to create a blog that makes money because monetizing your content will be a lot easier.
Step 2 – Choose Your Blog’s Name & Hosting
Now that you have found your niche it’s time to pick a domain name and decide which blogging platform and hosting provider to use so that your blog goes live and others can actually check it out live on the internet. Hosting basically means you get yourself an online space with a hosting service. I personally use Namecheap for my domain name and Siteground for hosting and can really recommend it. You can register with Namecheap here and with Siteground here. But I have also read only positive things about Bluehost, which is actually very affordable. You can start hosting your blog for as little as $2,95 (or 2,68€) per month!
FYI Bluehost allows you to pick a name for your later, so no pressure there. Take your time and choose the right domain name later!
For some, $2,95 a month might still sound too much fro a site that does not generate income yet. But keep in mind that while it may not be free, it’s crucial when starting a blog because choosing a free option comes with risks and limitations. Trust me, I’ve been there!
I started my blog with blogger and no domain, self-hosting whatsoever. It was okay back then but in 2019? No way! After a while, I migrated all my content to self-hosted WordPress.org. Why? Well free blogging sites can shut down your site anytime, you are not in control of your own blog and the biggest no is:
You are not going to be able to start a blog that makes money from a free blog.
They come with all kinds of restrictions and are not obligated to give you any reason when it comes to changes. You simply don’t own your blog. Therefore keep in mind that free services always come with strings attached, but imagine putting all your hard work into building a great blog and a third party can basically do anything with it without your permission.
IF YOU DON’T WANT THAT TO HAPPEN TO YOUR NEW MONEY MAKING BLOG…
Your domain name is very important which is why taking time (one reason why Bluehost might be your best choice) to find the right one is crucial. It’s wise to pick a name that is related to the topics you want to write about, so your readers know exactly what they’ll be getting when visiting your blog. It can even include your own name (like mine)!
My top tips to pick the right blog name are:
- It should be something readers will easily remember – so keep it simple
- Therefore spelling should be easy
- Keep it short so that it’s more likely to stick in your reader’s mind
- Pick a name that relates to the topics you want to write about
You will also need to check if your domain name is already taken and registered with someone else’s website. You can check if your domain is available here.
Step 3 – Choose Your Blog Theme
Now that you’ve found your target audience and got your blog name as well as hosting sorted, it’s about time to think about your blog theme.
What’s a blog theme? Well, a blog theme is the look or design of your site. There are many free WordPress themes but I personally opted for a blog theme called Étoile (cost me $69) from pipdig . I’ve tried out a bunch of their paid themes over the years and have always been very happy with the design, affordable prices, and services provided. If you’re not tech-savvy the team over at pipdig can actually take care of the migration and installation often blog theme for you.
What I especially like about pipdig themes is that you can even select a preview with many of their themes, depending on what your niche is. I went for the Lifestyle preview because my blog is mainly on lifestyle topics.
Your theme will most likely provide you with an appealing page layout, different colors and font styling to choose from, widget locations and navigations menus. You can play around to get your desired look. If you want me to write a detailed article on how to customize your blog design, feel free to leave me a message in the comment section below. 🙂
